Aqua one filter cartridge alternatives

Hi,

My wife got me an aqua one tank for my birthday. It comes with a top filter built in that uses those aqua-one cartridges with wool and carbon. Rather than continually replacing these can I just buy some wool and activated carbon and re-use the cartridge plastic container?

You can just use wool and other filter media instead of buying the cartridges. It just get's expensive when you keep replacing the cartridges.
